Barra: A little series of images # 1
It was pitch black once I'd left the lights of the slipway from the ferry terminal at Castlebay. I had some easy to follow instructions to get us to the holiday cottage that promised to be our great getaway for the Autumn Half-term holiday...
Of course the Islanders know every twist and turn of those narrow, single track roads, day or night but for a first timer, I felt like I was driving with a blindfold on and those Atlantic breakers I could hear to the left of me, above the rain pattering on the car roof were sobering. I realised in daylight, I couldn't really have got it wrong. There aren't so many roads on Barra and there's no such thing as traffic. And we weren't disappointed! Location, location, location. It was everything we wanted it to be and more; next to the sea and away from it all. Our first mission was to walk around our bay, Traigh Mhor. This is looking across the Traigh Mhor, Barra's Airfield when the tide is out, to Orasaigh.

This is very nice. The flower almost seems like it is seeking something.
pixelpixie: It was probably making the most of the calm, when the wind blows there, it leaves nothing undisturbed!
Beautiful! I love the single dandelion clock, looking out to sea. (:o)
pixelpixie: Thanks Rosalyn, I was surprised to see one intact with the Atlantic fronts that come in.
All by myself!!
What a beautiful shot well captured.
pixelpixie: Definitely! Thanks Tracy.
Even the flowers/weeds want to know what's worth looking at, Jose-Ann, don't you think? I love the names of all those places. They sound so mystical and other-worldly, just like this image!
pixelpixie: Even with those heavy October skies, the scenery was breath-taking - well we thought so and I hope to show more as the series develops. But I just had to shoot this one to add to my collection - bit like you and your control towers!
Sounds like my kind of place and this is certainly my kind of photograph, dandilions, you just can`t go wrong.
I love the shallow depth of field.
pixelpixie: Yes, I think you would love it there Alistair.
Great perspective here, both macro and landscape picture. That's brilliant. Colours are simply splendid.
pixelpixie: Thank-you so much Florence. I'm delighted you like it.
this has your way of seeing all over it, Jose. The wonderful movement in the dense grasses is a great contrast against the transparancy and delicacy of the dandelion clock. The background really adds a special atomosphere to your wonderful photo.
pixelpixie: You know, I think the thing that struck me that first day was that to survive on this island, nature hugged the land very, very closely. Trees and bushes were sparse and only to be found in well sheltered nooks and crannies. Anything that dared to raise its head above the level of the land risked all!
It's a beautifully sad one, Jose. Its life is over, the only thing remains to do is let the young ones sail the wind. And then- the end.
pixelpixie: Their life is over but proud to the end! Especially on Barra! To survive on this island, nature has to hug the land very closely so anything that dares to raise its head above the level of the land risks all!
You certainly have captured the colour and weight of a hebridean sky!
Beautiful palette of colours, gentle textures as ever- only you could have taken this.
pixelpixie: Thank-you! Barra from a dandelion clock's point of view, yes, I guess that has to be me!
Probably the tallest thing that grows there!
What an idyllic place to visit though, wonderful peace and quiet.
pixelpixie: Ellie you are so right! It was the thing that struck me straight away. To survive on that island, nature hugs the contours of the land so this dandelion was risking everything! The peace and quiet was palpable!
LIKEY
very nice exposure, DOF, framing, composition, subject, just amazing
pixelpixie: Hi Patrick, thank-you and thanks for dropping in, it's a pleasure.
the clock is master of all it see's, terrific shot. mal
pixelpixie: This was one very brave dandelion clock! Nothing else dares to raise its head above the contours of the land!
Perfect shot. I love it
This is a perfectly dreamy shot! A likey
I have got to put this in my likeys to remind me to think when taking landscapes. Beautiful Jose.
very beautiful
So beautiful, Jose!
Nice one, youve done well to get so much foreground interest in and yet you can still see islands in the background.
Great composition - it's like the dandelion is looking out to sea.
